Lufthansa has ended passenger operations with the Airbus A340-600, closing a 23-year chapter in the airline’s history. The retirement marks the end of an era for the four-engine aircraft, which unexpectedly returned to service after being withdrawn during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final flight was LH419 from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA), operated by an Airbus A340-600 registered as D-AIHW.

The aircraft departed Washington on Sunday, October 18, at 6:46 p.m. local time and arrived in Frankfurt at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, October 19, after a flight lasting approximately seven hours and 21 minutes.

The End of a 23-Year Chapter

The Airbus A340-600 has been a distinctive part of Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet since the airline entered service with it in 2003. Known for its elongated fuselage, four engines, and long-range capabilities, the aircraft became a familiar sight on the carrier’s intercontinental routes.

Lufthansa initially retired the A340-600 during the COVID-19 pandemic as the aviation industry faced an unprecedented decline in passenger demand. However, the airline later brought the type back into service as travel demand recovered and it needed additional long-haul capacity. Its return extended the aircraft’s operational life beyond initial expectations, allowing it to continue serving passengers on selected international routes.

Tracking the Final Flight

LH419 marked the end of Lufthansa’s A340-600 passenger operations, connecting the Washington area with the airline’s Frankfurt hub for the final time in regular passenger service.
